Asbestos has been used for more than 200 years and in the UK alone over one million commercial, industry and public buildings contain asbestos material. Asbestos was used in the UK between the years of the 1950s to the mid-1980s, asbestos was used in a variety of products such as thermal insulation, fireproofing, electrical insulation and building materials. Even up until 1999 some asbestos products were still being used. Any building in this period that was either built or renovated would more than likely contain asbestos in some form or another.

Before you can remove any asbestos you have to do a survey to learn the location, type, condition and extent of any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). There are two types of surveys first is the management survey a standard asbestos survey. Its purpose is to locate as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect ACMs in the building which could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, including foreseeable maintenance and installation, and access to their condition. The second is the refurbishment and demolition survey, this is done before any refurbishment or demolition work has taken place, the survey is fully intrusive and involves destructive inspection, as necessary, to gain access to all areas, including those that may be difficult to reach.
