You can’t tell whether a material contains asbestos just by looking at it. If something might contain asbestos, the safest thing to do is stop disturbing it, arrange professional sampling and wait for clear analysis before work continues.
Our trained surveyors take samples safely and send them to a UKAS-accredited laboratory, the one part of the process the law actually requires to be accredited. You receive a clear result and practical next steps: manage it, remove it, encapsulate it, or carry on if no asbestos is detected.

Don’t sample it yourself unless you’ve been trained
Disturbing a suspect material can release asbestos fibres into the air. It isn’t illegal to sample a material in your own home, but it isn’t always safe, so HSE recommends sampling is done by a trained, competent person. If the material is damaged, crumbling, likely to create dust, in a workplace or public building, or you’re simply not sure, don’t touch it. Let a qualified surveyor take the sample for you.
Whoever takes it, the sample must be analysed by a UKAS-accredited (ISO/IEC 17025) laboratory for the result to be reliable.
