This is usually the question that follows a survey, or finding out you’ve got asbestos some other way. It’s a different question to how much a survey costs, and a harder one to answer with a single figure, for a simple reason: a survey is a fairly standard visit, but “asbestos removal” covers everything from lifting one floor tile to stripping out an entire building.
A survey is broadly the same job wherever it happens – someone inspects the property, takes samples, and writes a report. Removal isn’t like that. The material, the amount of it, how it’s built into the property, and what has to happen to make the area safe afterwards are all different every time, and each of those moves the price independently.
As we cover in our guide to what UK law says about removing asbestos yourself, some work is licensable and some isn’t, and that distinction affects cost more than almost anything else.
Non-licensable work – asbestos cement like the garage roofs we’ve written about separately, for example – can usually be removed with fewer formal controls, which keeps the job quicker and the cost lower.
Licensable work is a different scale of job entirely. It has to be carried out by an HSE-licensed contractor, inside a sealed enclosure, with continuous air monitoring while the work is underway and a formal, independently-verified clearance test before anyone can go back into the area. HSE also has to be notified before the work starts. None of that is optional, and all of it adds real cost on top of the removal itself – which is exactly why a quote for a small non-licensable job and a quote for a licensed strip-out can look like they belong to completely different price scales, because in a sense they do.
A figure wide enough to cover everything from one floor tile to a fully licensed enclosure wouldn’t tell you anything useful, and a narrower number would risk being wrong for your specific job in either direction. That’s not us dodging the question – it’s the same honest answer we’d give in person. Where we have been able to give useful general guidance, such as for garage roof removal, we have – but for asbestos removal as a whole, the only number worth trusting is one based on your actual job.
If you already have a survey report, that’s the best starting point for a real quote – it tells us exactly what we’re dealing with. If you don’t, a site visit gets us there just as well. Either way, get in touch for a free, no-obligation quote, and we’ll give you a number based on your property, not a guess.
